What's your take on the student strike in Quebec?

We are behind the idea that education is a right and tuition fees are at the moment incredibly high. The amount of debt you can amass within a few years is amazing.

But we also think that violence shouldn’t be a tactic to combat this and that it is also very easy to use protest as an excuse to cause mayhem.

Hey followers, what’s your take on it?

How to Not Lose Poppies

Well we all know losing poppies is an issue, even though it means more donations, because you have to walk around looking like a dick until you find another box of them.

Also, sticking either your arm or your chest all the time is a bitch.

And if you stick the pin through one side of the poppy, it looks silly. The pin’s being visible looks silly no matter what, actually.

A helpful hint:

1. Weave the first centimetre or so of the pin through the centre of your lapel several times.

2. Begin to weave it through once more, but do not let the pin poke through the other side. Feel on both sides of the fabric to make sure it’s between the layers.

3. Carefully push the rest of the pin all the way through. Feel on both sides of the fabric again. There shouldn’t be anything that pricks your finger.

Ta da! Your poppy is now nestled tightly in there, there is nothing to prick you, and the unsightly pin is gone. I’d imagine many of you do it already, but if not, we hope this helps.

japilagan asks:

Both Australia and New Zealand are experiencing so-called "flag crisis" (because some elements of their society want to change their flag to more distinct designs). Canada has its own flag since 1965. Based on the Canadian experience, what will you say about the said flag debate in these fellow Commonwealth countries?

You can not even begin to comprehend how unqualified we are to answer this.

That said, I did a (tiny) bit of research and this is what i came up with. I’l try to answer your question as best i can.

Before we switched to the maple leaf in 1965 we were using the Union flag (also known as he Union Jack) but we had already started using the Canadian Red Ensign^1 when circumstances dictated the use of a distinctively canadian flag.

Then In 1964,

Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson appointed a committee to resolve the issue, sparking a serious debate about a flag change.

which seems to be the point at which New Zealand and Australia have found themselves. Not that this is an old debate, it has apparently been going on since the mid 70’s.

I suppose it makes sense that they’d like to get rid of the Union Jack, considering they arn’t exactly ‘colonies’ anymore and keeping the Union Jack as part of their flag design suggest dependancy. They are actually grouped in with Canada as to their status as a commonwealth state, and are not listed as one of the 14 still dependent on Britain.

Also, considering that the current flags colours (red, white and blue) are neither the Australian official colours (green and gold) or its heraldic colours (blue and gold) i’m perplexed as to why they would keep it, other than the obvious politics, and the fact it has already been established as their symbol.

The same argument stands with New Zealand who seem to have adopted black as their standard colour. New Zealand even has an unoffical flag^2 that is apparently used quite often (?)

The designs seem distinct enough to stand on their own, and the motives for keeping in England’s shadow seem to be political.

If the people want a new flag, i see no reason to deny them.

I always see people using those ‘God Bless America’ eagle graphics ironically so I thought:

oh man, what if Canadians were equally as loud and overzealous with that sort of blind patriotism

what would our obnoxious graphic representation look like
